Overview

Most of the presently available drugs are mainly of terrestrial origin; and drugs from the marine sources are very much limited as the research on medicinal marine life started only in 1950s. Marine organisms have been reported to be a huge reservoir of innovative medical drugs due to their unique secondary metabolites with vast bioactivities. Among the different groups of marine organisms, the sponges, cnidarians and microbes have been reported to contribute more than 50% of the marine bioactive compounds.  Within marine invertebrates, the Bryozoans and Crustaceans are also found to be important sources of bioactive compounds, which however, remain only partially explored, While more than 230 bioactive compounds have so far been derived from about 30 bryozoan species, only few compounds have been isolated from the marine crustaceans. As the marine bryozoans and crustaceans comprise several 1000s of species, these phyla may represent enormous sources for the discovery of novel compounds. Therefore, intensive research on their chemical ecology is the need of the hour.

Though few books are presently available on the medicinal values of marine invertebrates , a comprehensive volume on the therapeutical potential of marine bryozoans and crustaceans has not so far been published. It is hoped that the present publication would be of great use as a standard text-cum-reference for teachers, students and researchers of disciplines such as Marine Biology, Fisheries Science,  Biomedical Sciences and  Pharmaceutical Sciences;  a valuable reference for libraries of colleges and universities; and as a guide for the drug industries involved in the development of new drugs from the marine bryozoans and crustaceans.
