Overview

Although the freshwater ecosystems comprise less than 1%  of the earth’s surface, they are the home to at least 10% of earth’s plant and animal species. Freshwater habitats are incredibly diverse as they cover more than 400 large-scale ecoregions and thousands of rivers, lakes, and wetlands. They are the home to at least 140,000 species. Humans depend freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversity for food, health, material goods, recreation, etc. While the biodiversity, fisheries and environmental characteristics of these ecosystems have been well studied, the pharmaceutical compounds in general and anticancer potential in particular are not so far researched intensively.

Though few books are presently available on the medicinal marine life, books on medicinal freshwater life are almost nil except a title viz. “Freshwater Phytopharmaceutical Compounds” by the present authors (Dr.RS & Dr.SR) published in the year 2014. The present title “Medicinal Freshwater Life: Anticancer Potential” deals with the freshwater biota- derived anticancer /chemo-preventive compounds. When published, this title would fulfill the needs of graduate and undergraduate students and teachers of Aquatic Biology, Fisheries Science, Pharmacology and Bio-Pharmacy, besides serving as a guide for drug manufacturing companies in the development of new freshwater life- based anticancer drugs.
