Overview

Malaria is an infectious disease caused mainly by the protozoan parasite, Plasmodium falciparum which is responsible for most severe diseases and most fatal cases. The emergence and spread of artemisinin-resistant malaria over the past 15 years has led to a recent rise in global malaria cases and represents a major public health concern. Though, the first malaria vaccine has been approved for clinical use in October of 2021after intense research efforts, its 36 % efficacy highlights the need for novel and effective drugs to combat malaria. Further, the majority of present antimalarials are the derivatives of previous efficient compounds thereby new treatments have not been implemented into clinical practice since 1996. Current research efforts should therefore focus on developing novel chemical classes of compounds to help fight drug resistant malaria. Marine ecosystems offer vast scope for the development of potential antimalarial drugs.  Marine antimalarial compounds such as alkaloids, isonitrile-containing derivatives, and endoperoxides  are natural secondary metabolites derived primarily from marine biota like cyanobacteria, sponges and soft corals. These unique molecules have been reported to exhibit strong ant-plasmodial activity against Plasmodium falciparum, including chloroquine-resistant strains.

Though few books are presently available on the Medicinal Marine Life, no books have hither-to-been published on the antimalarial marine life. The present title when published would therefore be of great use for students and teachers of the disciplines such as Marine Biology, Fisheries Science, Life Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Sciences  besides serving as a potent reference source and manual for drug industries in the development of new, marine-biota based antimalarial drugs.
